This ceramic box features a beautiful ochre arabesque over a textured dark ground. Both of these colors recall long histories of Asian pottery: ochre is the signature color of Japanese Yayoi period ceramics, and the incised brown calls to mind the ancient surfaces of other antique pottery. The arabesque itself is an ancient pattern.

The two crenelated halves of this box fit together like a puzzle, with the outside patterns matching up exactly. Inside, the cool, ash-dusted surface contrasts nicely with the warmer colors found outside the box. Splashes of translucent white glaze add interest and light to the inner surfaces. Both inside and out, this beautiful box draws on traditional Asianate styles, combining them into a thoroughly modern work of art.
