Higashida Shigemasa's Oribe ceramics are characterized by the lushness and vibrancy of his glazes, and inviting textured clay which pool and flow beautifully across his dramatic plate and monumental box.

Here, brilliant turquoise blue lakes of glaze occupy the valleys and crevices of these lush green plate, whose dynamic surfaces recall mountainous landscapes with their undulating crests and valleys. This rough topography is countered by the serene stillness of the pooled blue glaze, which offers a restful point of contemplation as the eye travels over the surface of the work.

His surfaces have the feel of the unstudied artistry of nature, and yet this seemingly natural effect is made possible only though the impressive technical skill of the craftsman. These dramatic ceramics allow us to place the artist within the vibrant Japanese tradition of landscape art, and with these pieces he brings an entirely new perspective to this time-honored tradition.

Higashida's elegant Oribe and Shino ceramics have received rave reviews from collectors and connoisseurs alike, and have been exhibited widely throughout Japan and abroad, including at Gallery Miyasaka and Takashimaya, Sogo, and Wako department stores. Dai Ichi Arts has been proud to show his work many times, and continues to find delight in his stunning creations.  Higashida slowly reveals his "accidental beauty"to us. He puts it in this way, "桃栗三年柿八年、技は10年、芸は一生、やきものは一生半 "It takes 3 or 8 years to grow peaches and persimmons, 10 years to acquire a skill. It takes a life time to get it right"
